Are you curious about where language learning might take you?
The first language I really became interested in was Chinese. (I had studied English in school before, but back then, I saw it as just another subject, not a language.) I started learning Chinese in high school, and I found it so much fun to imitate and learn. Chinese has tones, which makes its pronunciation unique, and trying to mimic that and speak like a native was hilarious to me. Eventually, I decided to major in Chinese in college.
But it wasn’t as if I was good at Chinese from the start. Even though I loved studying languages, unfortunately, my grades in Chinese class weren’t great. But that didn’t discourage me. I simply enjoyed learning languages.
Then one day, I had the opportunity to go to China for a language program. The thrill of speaking Chinese and having locals understand me—and me understanding them—was indescribable. I had consistently practiced speaking and listening, so I was able to communicate confidently while I was there.
One day, in class, the teacher asked, “Who wants to do a 1:1 language exchange with me?” I immediately raised my hand. Later, when I asked my friends why they hadn’t volunteered, they said they didn’t understand what the teacher had said. From that point, I started doing a language exchange with my homeroom teacher one-on-one, and we even lived together for a while. This deepened my love for language learning.
1. Travel
During a one-month holiday, I backpacked across China, traveling by train to explore various parts of the vast country. The joy of seeing different people and places was beyond words. Travel became my new passion. I realized that exploring different cultures brought me immense happiness. Since then, I’ve traveled to over 20 countries, and as I write this, I’m currently on a three-week trip in Thailand.
2. A New Career
While in China, I made several local friends, and I began teaching Korean to those interested in learning. At first, I thought teaching Korean would be easy. But I was so wrong! The things that seemed natural to me were not at all obvious to foreign learners. I realized even the smallest grammar rules were challenging to explain if you hadn’t formally studied them.
What started as my passion for learning Chinese evolved into a career in teaching Korean. Upon returning to Korea, I began studying Korean language education. In 2010, I started my Master’s in Korean language education, and since then, I’ve been teaching Korean, connecting with people from different countries.
3. Living Abroad
I also ended up living in various countries. I wanted to experience more, so I lived in Jordan, the Philippines, and Vietnam, teaching Korean for over two years in each place. And while living there, I studied the local languages—Arabic, English, Vietnamese, and more.
4. Starting Like a Korean
In 2021, I officially launched “Like a Korean.” By starting my own online business, I could connect with people from all around the world. I created reels and posts teaching Korean, and now, I have over 700,000 followers combined on Instagram and TikTok. It’s been incredible to see so many people enjoying the content I create.
